Critical health hazards for dogs in France. Pine processionary caterpillars (tongue necrosis), foxtails (épillets), blue-green algae in rivers, and viper bites.
Present across the South of France, Atlantic coast, and Île-de-France pine forests. These caterpillars walk nose-to-tail in long processions on the ground.
Mechanism: Their microscopic hairs release thaumetopoein, a severe toxin causing massive allergic reactions.
Symptoms: Extreme drooling, swollen tongue turning dark purple/black, rapid breathing.
Emergency action: Rinse mouth with cold water WITHOUT rubbing. Rush immediately to a 24/7 veterinary hospital. Delay of even 2 hours can lead to tongue amputation or death by asphyxiation.
Found along sidewalks, dried fields, and public parks throughout France. With reverse barbs, they burrow inside ears, paws, nostrils, and eyes, migrating deep into muscles and organs.
Prevention: Inspect paws, between toes, and ears after every single walk in spring and summer.
During hot summer spells (Loire, Cher, Tarn, and stagnant lakes), benthic cyanobacteria form brown/green mats on rocks and surface scums. Ingesting even a mouthful of contaminated water or licking wet fur can cause fatal neurotoxicity within 30 minutes.
