Protect your dog from ticks in France. High-risk woodland regions, canine piroplasmosis symptoms, Lyme disease, and French veterinary treatments.
In France, ticks (specifically Dermacentor reticulatus) transmit Babesia canis, a microscopic parasite that rapidly destroys red blood cells. Piroplasmosis peaks in spring (March to June) and autumn (September to November) throughout central and southwestern France.
Warning symptoms: High fever (above 39.5°C / 103°F), extreme lethargy, loss of appetite, and distinctive dark brownish/orange urine ("coffee-colored").
Emergency urgency: Piroplasmosis is fatal within 48 to 72 hours without treatment. Immediate veterinary injection of imidocarb (Carbesia) is life-saving.
